Dawn had never propositioned a man in her life. She’d never asked one to fuck her. She liked it. A lot.

Being terrified and stalked and wondering if she was going to live to see tomorrow gave her a new sense of power. Not that she was hoping to die, but she knew if she did, she didn’t want to die feeling like she’d never lived.

And before Gage, she’d definitely never experienced anything like that. “We need to do that again,” she breathed when she could force words out.

Gage chuckled softly. “I won’t tell you no.”

“That’s good because I’m not very good at hearing no from you.”

“Just from me?” he asked.

She shrugged when he pushed up to look at her. She was pretty content with his weight on top of her. “I’m not usually like that.”

“I’m not sure I want to ask what you’re usually like when you have sex with other men.”

She snorted. “You make it sound like I do that so often.”

He shrugged and rolled off her. He walked out of the room to the bathroom, leaving the door open and the light off while he took care of the condom and washed his hands. He was back in a minute, pulling her close under the covers. “We don’t know each other very well. And that’s okay. I’m not trying to get you to tell me everything. Just saying I don’t know how often you’re having sex. You don’t have to tell me.”

She snuggled in closer, her head on his chest rising with each breath he took. “It’s been a while. Eighteen months. I… I’m an addict.”

He stiffened under her head, then slowly relaxed in a way that told her he wasn’t really relaxed.

“I wasn’t trading sex for drugs or anything like that. My ex-husband and I got married when I got pregnant with our daughter. I tried to convince myself we could make it work, but we fought more than we got along. Nothing bad, just bickering. We weren’t right together, but we wanted to give her a good life.”

“You can still do that.”

Dawn nodded. “We’re trying. Well, he’s trying. She’s… When things went sideways with Owen, I moved out. Got an apartment and told myself I didn’t need him. Met a neighbor who was funny and looked at me like I was worthy. That makes me sound so bad, but—”

“It makes you sound human,” Gage said.

Dawn was quiet for a minute, absorbing his words and letting them dissolve the lump they created in her throat. “Thank you.” She cleared her throat and continued. “We started hanging out, and eventually we started sleeping together. As things with Owen deteriorated, it was nice to know someone wanted me. Then the drugs showed up. Nothing major at first, but it escalated quickly. Eighteen months ago, I overdosed and my daughter had to call nine-one-one and do CPR on me until the paramedics showed up.”

“Shit,” he breathed.

“Yeah. So, I don’t blame Savannah for hating me or not wanting to be around me.
